IT TAKES me back to schooldays, the poring over history textbooks, trying to visualize and commit to memory the rise and fall of the Lodi dynasty. For once, I prefer to lose myself among the sand and stone rather than walk beneath the trees. I am at the Lodi Gardens in Delhi, and the morning air is filled with the melodious chanting of the Gayatri Mantra

ॐ भूर् भुवः स्वः

तत् सवितुर्वरेण्यं

भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि

धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

Aum Bhoor Bhuwah Swaha / Tat Savitur Varenyam / Bhargo Devasaya Dheemahi / Dhiyo Yo Naha Prachodayat

Almighty God, guide our intellect in the right direction

A rendezvous with history among the remains of 15th & 16th century monuments of the Sayyid and Lodi dynasties

A birdbath: too early in the day for feathered visitors

Architectural glory: standing testimony to a bygone era

Domes & ceilings: the splendour and beauty of curved and coloured lines
